The next wave of strategy - with Cees de Jong, Chairman of Novonesis

Getting strategy right during times of high uncertainty

As part of our ongoing series “The next wave of strategy”, ReD's managing partner Mads Holme speaks to Cees de Jong, chairman of Novonesis, on how to build and execute on strategy at times of high uncertainty. Speaking from decades of experience in leadership roles and on boards, Cees shares his thoughts on why strategy is hard to follow through on in practice, how to lead teams rooted in trust and shared values, and finally, why a strong culture leads to better performance. Having overseen the merger between Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, the biggest in Danish history, Cees also reflects on how they approached merging the two cultures, which has been a key driver in the early success of Novonesis.

THE NEXT WAVE OF STRATEGY

At ReD, we have been developing a new perspective on strategy in collaboration with Roger Martin, one that extends beyond economic optimisation and user-centricity. Building on these two pillars, this new approach to strategy also incorporates understanding complex social dynamics in order to sharpen a company’s perspective on the culture or “world” they’re operating in, and in turn, unlock growth. In this video series, we hear from leaders on why this is the way forward.

“We need to think much more in scenarios. We need to think much more in a flexible approach, in being ready to address the unknown or the unexpected.”

“A company is not as good as its strategy, a company is as good as its people.”

“Culture is a strategic enabler of success.  It's shared, it's pervasive in the organisation, but most importantly, it is something that has endurance, it stays there.”
